How to winterize your RV

A plain-language sequence for a Highspire winter. The shop can do this for you if you would rather not.

Winters in Highspire and central Pennsylvania regularly drop below freezing. Water left in tanks and lines can expand and split fittings, which is a much bigger repair than a proper winterization. You can follow the steps below yourself, or bring the rig to Etnoyer's RV World at 576 2nd Street, Highspire, PA 17034 and the shop will winterize it for you.

Steps

  1. Drain all freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks.
  2. Drain the water heater. Turn it off and let it cool first. Remove the drain plug. Do not turn the heater back on while it is empty.
  3. Blow out the water lines with compressed air. Even after the lines are blown with air, the water pump head and the prefilter still hold water. So after blowing the lines, bypass the water heater or hook a direct intake tube to the pump and suck RV antifreeze (the pink potable kind, not automotive) into the pump head until it comes through.
  4. Pour a little of that antifreeze in each P-trap and the toilet.
  5. Leave faucets open slightly, retract the awning, and cover or store the unit.
